Using CSS with XML

In this lesson css styling was used alongside XML. This proved to be very useful as in XML it allowed me to name my tags to anything i wanted and with css styling i could change the appearance of the XML file. i found that there is not much difference between HTML and XML but for the reasons of being able to change the tags name i would rather use XML.

Z-Index Positioning

Personally when trying to put something into postion i find that it reacts different when showing it up in the browser, when trying to put a box for example in the left corner it ends up been justified to the center, this leads to alot of frustation and time consuming trying to fix the problem. But finally i have found a easy way to allow myself to control the movement of a box to my specific location, to do this i have simply used a method called Z-Index property, one of many other poistion styles.

The Z-Index is a very useful techinique as it allows me to overlap a box on another, depending on which number i give the Z-Index follows the numbers to overlap a box and can also change the attributes of the colours of the box.

I also found problem with this as i found that i could justify the positioning of the images in the center, to to this i had to simple use a “relative position” style which will allow myself to postion my images to the center.

Usability

Usability is very important for any designer, so i have visited car website to analysis its use of usability.

Colours – There are many different colours used to attract the users attention

Site Layout – The website has been laid out by using frames to seprate its information

Fonts - The fonts are at average size, maybe about 12pt, this in my opinion is abit small and feel that the reading of the site will be difficult for people visually imparied

Images – Images used are very big and attractive, with the use of animation. but maybe a problem with people who have epilepsy

Navigation Controls – Use of navigation is very simple and user friendly, again the use if flash has been chosen

Hyperlinks - There are many use of hyperlinks to help users to go to their desired page with ease, a top menu is available for the users to navigate.

Ease of use – The use of the website was very easy and simple, it was very professionally created and found it very effective

Importance of Usability and Accessibility

When creating your website there are many points to consider, such as choosing the right images, using the right background/text colour etc. But most importantly the designer has to be careful of usability and accessibility, below is a simple list of what maybe of importance which considering usability and accessibility

1. Easy site navigation
2. Obvious visitor paths
3. Readability
4. Site navigation by handicapped visitors
5. Screen readers

Why use CSS??

To be honest i thought CSS would just be a complex way of creating different styles for your page, but i have personally highlighted the advantages of using CSS..

I decided to change certain aspects of a button such as changing the colour etc… when creating a simple button CCS allows the user to make some sophisticated changes to the way the link behaves when the cursor goes over it.. where the button can be used on the website as a navigation menu.
